As for geographical position, Thua Thien Hue is the last northern central locality found on the map. Located at the latitude of 15059’30” - 16044’30” and Torrid Zone, the province has typical monsoon tropical climate with high temperature and thermal radiation. Situated in the Central and blocked by Bach Ma mountain in the south, Thua Thien Hue is a transitional climatic zone between the south and the north.
Like other coastal central localities, Thua Thien Hue was affected by monsoon climate. This place witnesses the interference of air masses from the north, the south, the west and the east.
In addition to its geographical position, other terrain characteristics such as the altitude and direction of main mountains and forest cover also play an important part in climatic differentiation in specific areas. From the west to the east of the province locate average high mountain, low mountains, hills, deltas, lagoon, sandy dunes and sea. This geographical feature results in a steady decrease of temperature from the east to the west and an increase of rainfall from the east to the west as well as from the north to the south. Of all, mountain and hill take up nearly 75.9% of the natural area. The rise of rainfall in mountainous areas in the west and south west of the province depends on the direction of main mountains. Mountains, namely western A Luoi, Dong Ngai, eastern A Luoi - Nam Dong in the north west - south east direction connect with Bach Ma - Hai Van range. This natural shield stops the hot wind from the south west in the summer and receives the north east wind in the winter. The wind was diverted to north-west, creating heavy rain in A Luoi - Nam Dong - Bach Ma - Phu Loc. Truong Son range results in heavy rain in the winter, hot south west wind and heavy rain in the west of Truong Son range in the summer.
